CJ’s intervention sought to stop ‘torture’ on journos
Factions of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists and Dhaka Union of Journalists yesterday submitted a memorandum to Chief Justice Md Muzammel Hossain seeking his steps to stop "harassment and torture on media and journalists."
Leaders of the BFUJ and DUJ placed it through Supreme Court Registrar AKM Shamsul Islam.
Contacted, the registrar said the chief justice has nothing to do in this regard as he is not an executive official.
Arrest of Amar Desh acting editor Mahmudur Rahman, Sangram editor Abul Asad and two Rtv journalists; shutting down of Diganta Television, Islamic Television, Channel 1, and Amar Desh; and Sagar-Runi murder, among others, incidents have been pointed out in the memorandum.
The journalist leaders urged the chief justice to take steps to free Mahmudur.
BFUJ President Ruhul Amin Gazi, its Secretary General Shawkat Mahmud, Jatiya Press Club General Secretary Syed Abdal Ahmed and DUJ President Abdul Hye Shikder among others, were present.
