Two sentenced to die for killing businessman
A Narayanganj court on Monday sentenced two persons to death for the killing of businessman Moudud Ahmed Shaon four years ago.
The murder took place centring around a love affair and Tk 7 lakh loan, said Additional Public Prosecutor Maksuda Ahmed.
Rabiul Awal, judge of Narayanganj additional district and sessions judge’s court-1, sentenced to the two friends of the victim to die by hanging. They are Sajjad Hossain Basu, 30, of Shiddhirganj and Rakib Hossain Babul alias Babu of Sonargaon upazila.
Sajjad was present in the court during the announcement of the verdict. The other accused, Rakib, has been on the run since the murder.
Shaon, 24, of Shiddhirganj owned a business of furnace oil. Through his business activities, he became friends with Rakib, who was also in the same business. On the other hand, Sajjad had been friends with the victim since childhood.
Because of their friendship, Shaon had lent Tk 2 lakh to Rakib while one of Shaon’s friends gave Rakib another Tk 5.3 lakh as loan. And soon enmity brewed up as Rakib had to regularly pay shares of his profits to both Shaon and his friend.
In the meantime, Sajjad grew hostile after being ditched by his girlfriend, who after breaking up with Sajjad, developed an affair with one of Shaon’s cousins.
On July 9, 2014, Sajjad and Rakib called out Shaon from his house, saying they would give him his share of the profit.
They took him to Dalrodi village in Sonargaon on that night and made him drink Phensedyl mixed with sedatives. When the victim fell unconscious, the duo slit his throat. The body was recovered the next day.
Later, Shaon’s father Nasir Uddin filed a murder case against the two.
After the verdict, the father expressed satisfaction, and hoped that the High Court would uphold the judgement and police would arrest the fugitive accused Rakib soon.
