SUST shut for 15 days after BCL infighting

Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) was closed for next 15 days today following a clash between two factions of Bangladesh Chhatra League on the campus in Sylhet last night.

As per the authorities’ decision, male students have already left their dormitories by 8:00am. The female students’ halls however remained open.

The clash took place between the two BCL groups of Sust unit over an internal issue around 8:30pm yesterday. No injury was reported in the incident, reports our Sylhet correspondent.

After an emergency syndicate meeting started around 10:00am today, the authorities cancelled all classes and examinations until January 5 to avoid further untoward incident.

During the two-hour meeting the Sust syndicate also decided to ban meetings, processions, rallies and slogans on the campus, said Professor Kabir Hossain, a syndicate member and also adviser to the university’s Students Welfare Association.

Sust authorities in the meeting formed a five-member committee led by Prof Jahir Bin Alam to investigate the BCL infighting that took place last night.

Around 12:30pm, the general students blocked the Sylhet-Sunamganj highway protesting the authorities’ decision to halt the educational activities.

A group of the students also besieged the vice-chancellor’s bhaban, a protester, Sarwar Tusher, told our Sylhet correspondent.
