Stop setting up SEZ
Speakers at a meeting in Sylhet yesterday called upon the government to stop setting up a special economic zone (SEZ) in Chandpur tea garden area in Habiganj's Chunarughat upazila.
Organised by Sylhet Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) and bangla daily The Prothom Alo, the meeting was held in Sylhet Chamber of Commerce and Industry hall room, titled “Contribution of Sylhet in the miracle of Bangladesh economy”.
Salah Uddin Ali Ahmed, president of SCCI, presided over the programme while Dr Forash Uddin, former governor of Bangladesh Bank, presented the keynote speech.
Sultana Kamal, executive director of Ain O Salish Kendra, told this correspondent that we urged the government to cancel the setting up of SEZ in arable lands in tea garden area.
Advocate Shahidul Islam Sahin, former president of the Sylhet District Bar association, said “We expect that the civil administration will work to ensure people's rights. The government should take care of those people whose lives are in danger.”
Earlier, the government took a decision to establish a special economic zone on 511 acres of lands in tea estates in Chandpur of Habiganj.
Workers from four tea gardens in Chunarughat have been continuing their protests for about one month demanding cancellation of the plan.
