Stop encroachment on Dhaka canals: HC
The High Court yesterday directed the government to immediately stop the construction of structures on the canals identified by the Dhaka district administration.
The court also ordered the deputy commissioner of Dhaka to submit a report on the steps taken to stop encroachment of the canals and water bodies within two weeks.
At the same time, the HC issued a rule asking the respondents to explain as to why they should not be directed to recover the canals from land grabbers.
Secretaries to the ministries of cabinet, home affairs, LGRD and housing and public works, inspector general of police (IGP), managing director of Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (Wasa) in Dhaka, chief executive officers of Dhaka North and South city corporations, Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (Rajuk) chairman, deputy commissioner and superintendent of police of Dhaka have been asked to respond to the rule.
The HC bench of Justice Quazi Reza-Ul Hoque and Justice Mohammad Ullah came up with the order and rule on a suomuto (voluntary) move following a report published on the Bnagla daily Prothom Alo on October 24 under the headline “Dhakar Khale 248 Dokholder " (248 land grabbers in Dhaka's canals).
The HC bench also fixed November 12 for passing further order on the issues.
Meanwhile, the same bench ordered the authorities concerned to stop the activities on Rupnagar canal in Dhaka and to submit a report to this effect before the court by November 12.
The judges passed the order following another report published in the Prothom Alo yesterday under a headline “Rupnagar Khal Nie Kutsit Karmokando" (Dirty activities involving Rupnagar canal).
Deputy Attorney General Tapas Kumar Biswas and Assistant General Titus Hillol Rema were present at the courtroom.
