Shaheed Dr Milon Day today

Shaheed Dr Milon Day will be observed today marking the 25th death anniversary of Dr Shamsul Alam Khan Milon who was killed by armed men of the then autocrat HM Ershad.

Dr Milon, then joint secretary of Bangladesh Medical Association, was gunned down near TSC of Dhaka University in 1990, in the then regime's attempt to suppress a mass movement.

However, his death gave impetus to the anti-autocracy movement, eventually dethroning Ershad. Issuing a statement on the occasion, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia said Milon was their inspiration in every movement against all anti-democracy forces.

Political parties and socio-cultural and professional bodies will observe the day with programmes like placing of wreaths and offering of special prayers at his grave on the Dhaka Medical College campus and at Milon Smrity Chattar near TSC.
