SC clears way for Moudud's graft trial
The Supreme Court yesterday upheld a High Court order that cleared the way for the lower court to continue the trial proceedings of a corruption case against former BNP law minister Moudud Ahmed.
Anti-Corruption Commission on September 16, 2007 filed the case against Moudud with Gulshan Police Station on charge of amassing wealth beyond his known sources of income and withholding information about his assets.
Yesterday, a four-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain dismissed a leave to appeal petition filed by Moudud challenging the HC order.
The HC on July 25 last year summarily rejected a petition filed by Moudud challenging the lower court order that framed charges against him in the case.
ACC lawyer Advocate Khurshid Alam Khan told The Daily Star that there is no legal bar for the lower court to continue the trial against Moudud following the apex court order.
A Dhaka court on June 21 last year framed charges against Moudud in the corruption case.
