Road crashes kill 5
Five people were killed and two others injured in road accidents in four districts yesterday and on Thursday.
In Chittagong city, two people were killed as a covered-van rammed a rickshaw in Bandartila area under EPZ Police Station.
The deceased were rickshaw-puller Md Babul, 45, of Pirojpur and passenger Kohinur Begum, 40, of Bandartila area.
Babul died on the spot while critically injured Kohinur was rushed to Chittagong Medical College Hospital where the on-duty physician declared her dead, said Nayek Jahangir Alam of CMCH Police Camp.
Assistant Sub-Inspector of the station Khurshid Alam said they arrested helper-turned-driver Md Parvez, 18, and seized the vehicle.
The driver got down from the van handing over the steering to the helper at Alanker Intersection in the city on their way from Dhaka in the morning, said Khurshid quoting the arrestee.
Filing of a case was under process with the police station in this connection.
In Dinajpur, Abdus Sattar, 98, of Bijoynagar village was killed as a truck hit him on Dinajpur-Panchagarh highway in Kabirajhaat area of Birganj upazila.
In Naogaon, Hamidul Islam, 45, of Karajgram, was killed as his motorcycle hit a bridge after he lost control over the vehicle in Abadpukur village of Raninagar upazila on Thursday afternoon.
The deceased was a teacher of Karajgram Government Primary School.
In Tangail, a man was killed and two others were injured in road accidents at the eastern part of Bangabandhu Bridge in Goalbari area under Kalihati upazila.
The deceased was Sukumar, 50, a truck driver.
Officer-in-Charge of East Police Station of Bangabandhu Bridge Asabur Rahman said the accident occurred when a pulse-laden a truck collided head-on with a rod-laden truck in the area, leaving Sukumar dead on the spot and injuring two others.
The injured were admitted to Tangail Medical College Hospital.
