Speed up probe or face tougher movement

One year into the murder of Sohagi Jahan Tonu, Comilla Gonojagoron Mancha yesterday threatened to launch a tougher movement unless the probe sees swift progress.
The Mancha said this after submitting a letter to police, enquiring about the current status of the case's investigation.
The Mancha -- a platform set up to demand the highest punishment for all war criminals of the 1971 Liberation War -- also threatened to wage a tougher movement if the authorities concerned fail to provide an update on the progress of the case within 10 days.
A team of the Mancha led by its spokesperson of Comilla chapter Khairul Anam Raihan submitted the letter to Superintendent of Police in Comilla at 11:30am.
Other members include Syed Ahmed Tarek, Mamota Raihan Momo, Nabil Hasan Onimesh and Khandaker Mohibul Haque.
Khairul Anam said, ''CID could not give any significant update in Tonu murder case over the last one year. Therefore, we want to know within 10 days what the progress of the investigation is."
''Or else, we will organise a press conference at Comilla Press Club on April 2, and will launch a campaign among students of different schools and colleges. Taking their support, we will wage a tougher movement," he said.
He hoped that law enforcers would identify Tonu's killers very soon and ensure their highest punishment.
Earlier at 10:30am, students of Comilla Victoria College arranged a human chain, demanding punishment for Tonu's killers.
Tonu, a theatre activist and student of the college, was found murdered in a bush in the Comilla Cantonment area on March 20.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh Chhatra Federation yesterday held a demonstration in the capital's Shahbagh, demanding punishment for the killers of Tonu.
They also brought out a torch procession.
The student organisation's General Secretary Ashraful Alam Sohel said Tonu's murder is an evidence of "extreme insecurity" of the citizens.
The government has to ensure justice for the families of all murder victims including Tonu, he added.
Instead of updating the probe findings in Tonu murder case, the authorities concerned are trying to put the things under carpet, speakers claimed.
They also said the family of Tonu have been waiting for justice for the last one year, but has not seen any development yet. Not a single suspect has been identified so far, they said.
