Renowned Professor Ajoy Roy, father of slain blogger Avijit Roy, has passed away at a hospital in Dhaka. He was 85.
Prof Roy breathed his last at 12:35pm at ICU of BIRDEM in Dhaka, Brigadier General (retd) Shahidul Hoque Mallik, director of the hospital, told The Daily Star this afternoon.
The professor was suffering from old age complication, Brig Mallik said adding that Prof Roy was admitted to the hospital with fever and difficulty in breathing on November 25.
His health condition has been deteriorating since November 27 evening, and he was moved to the ICU later.
Prof Ajoy, father of slain blogger Avijit Roy and a founder of Ekattorer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee, played a key role in the movement for trial of war criminals. He was now one of the advisers of the committee.
Ajoy is a former physics professor at Dhaka University. He is best known for his prominent role in human rights activism and freethinking. While testifying last month before a magistrate court -- in his son’s murder case -- Ajoy, out of frustration, said he would not continue appearing for the hearings.
