Proceedings against BNP's Mosharraf to continue
The Supreme Court yesterday upheld a High Court order that had cleared way for the trial court to continue its proceedings of a corruption case against BNP leader Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain.
Yesterday, a leave to appeal petition filed by Mosharraf, challenging the HC order, was dismissed by a four-member bench of the Appellate Division of the SC headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain.
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on January 10 of 2008 filed a case with Ramna Police Station against Mosharraf and his wife Bilkis on charges of illegally amassing wealth worth Tk 12.51 crore and concealing information about Tk 3.11 crore in their wealth statement.
Following the SC order, now no legal bar remains for the lower court to continue trial proceedings against Khandaker Mosharraf, ACC lawyer Advocate Khurshid Alam Khan told The Daily Star.
On January 9 this year, the HC cleared the way for the lower court concerned to continue the trial proceedings of the case against the BNP leader when it rejected a petition in which Mosharraf had sought further investigation and a stay order on the trial proceedings.
Mosharraf in the petition claimed that he did not own some of the properties mentioned in the case filed against him.
Later on, Mosharraf filed the leave to appeal petition with the SC, challenging the HC order.
Advocate AJ Mohammad Ali appeared for the BNP leader.
