Prime accused held in Kolkata
After the murder of Chittagong youth Md Anik, two of the suspected killers fled across the border and holed themselves up in Kolkata. But soon they had their luck run out. Kolkata police have arrested them and handed them over to Bangladesh authorities.
The two are prime accused Mohiuddin Tushar and suspect Ekhlasur Rahman. They were among a group of youths who stabbed Anik, a driver, to death in front of his house in the port city on June 17. The duo had fled to Kolkata to avoid arrest.
SM Mostain Hossian, deputy commissioner of Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP-South) said the two were arrested following information given by Bangladeshi police.
They were handed over to CMP yesterday at Benapole border after completing all legal procedure, he told The Daily Star. The details would be disclosed at a press briefing today, he said.
Anik, 26, was killed after his younger brother Roni had an altercation over honking his motorbike in the evening. Later, at night, Mohiuddin came back with some youths to the victim's house and stabbed him dead. During the attack, Mohiuddin also fired several blank shots from his firearm, said police.
Anik's father had sued 12 identified and 15 unidentified people.
EENADU India, a newspaper based in Andhra Pradesh, reported that the duo entered Kolkata four to five days ago. Following information by Bangladeshi authorities, the Special Task Force arrested them in Free School Street area of Kolkata on Friday.
According to the news report, the area is popular among Bangladeshis.
