Plan for haor regions urgent: Speakers
Prof Dr Khalequzzaman Matin, a teacher of Lock Haven University in the USA, yesterday underscored the need for taking plans for the haor regions keeping in mind their agriculture, fisheries, livestock, forestation and biodiversity.
Khalequzzaman, also a resident of the haor region in Bangladesh, made the remarks while presenting the keynote paper at a views-exchange meeting on 'sustainable plans' at Dhaka Reporters Unity, said a press release.
If roads are constructed in the haor regions in an unplanned way, the drainage system will face obstruction after rain, he said, adding that those will also hamper agriculture.
Advocate Hasnat Qaiyum presided over the progamme while Chairman of the Institute of Water Environment Engineer M Enamul Haque, Engineer Tofail Ahmed and agronomist Rafiq Chowdhury were, among others, present.
Speakers also demanded that the features of the haor regions be kept intact in all the situations.
