Non-MPO teachers call off hunger strike
Demonstrating for over a month, teachers and employees of non-MPO educational institutions called off their hunger strike today upon request of Professor Anisuzzaman.
A group of prominent persons, including Prof Anisuzzaman, went in front of the Jatiya Press Club around 3:00pm and requested them to withdraw, reports Bangla daily Prothom Alo.
Later, the agitating teachers broke their fast by taking water offered by Prof Anisuzzaman.
Rasheda Choudhury, Advisor to the Former Care Taker Government and Sarwar Ali, trustee of Liberation War Museum, among other prominent persons, were present at that time.
The teachers started their sit-in-programme on June 10, pressing home their demand as there is no specific budget allocation for the 2018-2019 fiscal year on MPO. They began their hunger strike on June 25.
The MPO is government's share in the payroll of private educational institutions. The government pays 100 percent basic salaries and small monthly allowances to the teachers under the scheme.
Over 5 lakh teachers and employees of around 27,000 secondary schools, colleges, madrasas and technical institutes are now receiving the MPO benefits.
According to leaders of the federation, there are 5,242 non-MPO educational institutions, where around 80,000 teachers work without any government pay.
