A youth was stabbed to death in Cumilla Sadar upazila's Chandpur village yesterday morning. The deceased was identified as Shariful Islam Jony (24) of the same village.
According to family members, a group of 10-12 people called Jony out of his house at Chandpur Bonoful Goli around 5am. After a few minutes, his family heard him screaming, so they rushed out and found him critically injured with a knife stuck in the chest.
Family members immediately took him to Cumilla Medical College Hospital. However, due to his critical condition, he was referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, but he died before they could reach.
After immediate action, police detained three people named Yeasin, Rajib and Hasan in this connection.
Mother of the victim Banna Akter told The Daily Star, "My son was killed by the gang of Hridoy Hossain, Sagor Mia, Md Rafiq, Sohel Mia and Sagor, all of whom are involved in drug peddling. There was a conflict between Jony and the gang as he was against their illegal activities."
Following the incident, agitated locals came out of their houses and started going after the alleged murderers' homes. However, the situation was brought under control after additional police were deployed in the area.
Abdullah Al Mamun, additional police super of Cumilla, said, "The situation is under control. Team members of different agencies including PBI have visited the spot."
Anwarul Haque, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Model Police Station, said, "We have arrested a suspect and detained two more. Upon discovering the motive behind the murder, we will start taking legal action."
