Woman stabbed to death by ‘acquaintance’ in Ctg
A woman was hacked to death and two others, including her son, were injured at Korbaniganj in the port city yesterday.
Neighbours said the attacker, who the victim addressed as “mama” (uncle), also looted valuables from the house before fleeing the scene.
The deceased was identified as Rokhsana Begum, 40, said Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammed Mohsin of Kotwali Police Station.
After neighbours called the 999 hotline, police rushed to the spot.
“The murder took place between 12pm and 2pm on the fourth floor flat at Amin Shaheb’s building,” the OC said.
The two injured -- Rokhsana’s son Abdul Aziz, and neighbour Abdul Ahad -- were admitted to Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH), the police official said, adding that Aziz’s condition is critical.
Statements from neighbours and CCTV footage confirmed that a man, aged around 35, stabbed Rokhsana and her son, and looted the house.
“We have taken domestic help Yasmin into custody, as she is an eyewitness,” the police official said.
Yasmin, a part-time domestic worker, told police that after doing her chores at Rokhsana’s home, she went to the fifth floor to finish her work there.
“I came back to aunty’s [Rokhsana] flat around 12pm and after I knocked on the door, it was opened by the attacker. He pulled me in and held me hostage,” Yasmin said.
“He came in when I was working at the fifth floor apartment,” she added.
Soon after, Aziz, a college student, came home and knocked on the front door, and the attacker also held him hostage, Yasmin said.
“Aunty was stabbed before Aziz came home,” the domestic worker told police.
“We were both taken to aunty’s room and at one point, when a brawl broke out between the two men, the attacker stabbed Aziz in the back,” she said, adding that the perpetrator also set a mattress on fire.
Aziz told the attacker that he was thirsty and managed to open the main door to flee, Yasmin said.
“The attacker ran after Aziz and at that moment I screamed for help,” she said.
Shahnaz Begum, next-door neighbour of the deceased, said she saw a man getting into Rokhsana’s apartment.
“Rokhsana opened the door and addressed him as ‘mama’,” Shahnaz said.
When Aziz fled and was chased by the attacker, another neighbour Abdul Ahad tried to stop the man and was stabbed, police said.
The victim’s husband Abul Kashem told police that they have no enmity with anyone.
