The Communist Party of Bangladesh in Narayanganj yesterday protested the government's plans to hike gas price.
At a sit-in at Central Shaheed Minar in the city's Chashara, party leaders also demanded that Wasa supply clean water to the city dwellers.
During the two-hour programme, CPB Narayanganj district president Hafizul Islam said the government is “conspiring” to increase gas price in the name of a public hearing on March 11.
He said gas price was increased several times earlier. However, people are not getting sufficient gas, he added.
“If gas and electricity prices are increased again, people will suffer more. Because such a move will eventually impact other issues like prices of essential commodities and house rent,” said Hafizul Islam.
The “decision” should be withdrawn immediately, he said, adding that otherwise, the masses will conduct a strong movement.
Meanwhile, the speakers also said although water price has been increased, the city dwellers are getting dirty water.
Abdul Hai Sharif, president of CPB city unit, and Sujoy Roy Chowdhury Biku, its general secretary, were present among others on the occasion.
On Saturday, State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid said the government might raise gas prices, mainly for commercial and industrial consumers and for power plants.
