Will provide appointment letters to workers
Bangladesh Road Transport Owners Association yesterday informed a parliamentary body that they will provide appointment letters to transport workers from now on, as part of the effort to restore order on the roads.
Top leaders of Road Transport Owners Association came up with the announcement at the meeting of the parliamentary standing committee on labour and employment at Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.
Khondaker Enayet Ullah, secretary general of the association, told The Daily Star that they do not have any objection to provide appointment letters to transport workers. But the problem is in most cases they do not want to take it, as they frequently change jobs.
He also said the Road Transport Owners Association will inform all members to issue appointment letters in line with the new law.
Jatiya Party lawmaker and chairman of the parliamentary watchdog Mujibul Haque Chunnu chaired the meeting.
Committee members and state minister for labour and employment Mannujan Sufian, Shajahan Khan, Israfil Alam and Shamsun Nahar, and Sarak Paribahan Sramik Federation general secretary Osman Ali, among others, were present at the meeting.
At the meeting, transport owners and workers’ leaders blamed each other for not issuing appointment letter to workers.
Leaders said owners are not interested in providing them with appointment letters due to their own interest.
Meanwhile, transport owners said workers are not interested to take appointment letters as they frequently change jobs.
Mujibul Haque said the parliamentary standing committee in its meeting asked the ministry officials to issue letters to both owners and workers to implement the matter.
