‘Wage social movement against drugs’
President Abdul Hamid yesterday urged students to wage a strong social movement against drugs.
“Cumilla is one of the routes by which drugs enter the country. Drugs have reached the hands of school, college and university students, but they must fight back,” he said at the first-ever convocation of Cumilla University.
The chancellor of the university also called upon universities to take initiatives for quality research alongside regular academic activities.
Finance Minister Mustafa Kamal delivered the convocation speech, while Deputy Minister for Education Mohibul Hassan Chowdhoury, University Grants Commission Chairperson Prof Kazi Shahidullah and Cumilla University Vice Chancellor Prof Emran Kabir Chowdhury were special guests.
Altogether, 2,888 students were conferred graduation and post-graduation degrees, and 14 of them were awarded with gold medals.
The university was established in 2006 as the country’s 26th public university with seven functional departments. Currently, there are 19 departments, 7,055 students and 253 teachers.
