A vile act of cruelty
As a threat to a neighbour centring a land dispute, two persons allegedly slaughtered a dog and her four puppies in Gazipur yesterday morning.
A complaint was filed against Hashem, 50, and his brother Arif, 28, of Dakkhin Barotopa village under Shreepur upazila in the evening, said Assistant Sub-inspector Mobarak Hossain of Shreepur Police Station. “We are investigating the matter,” he said.
The act of cruelty -- at the house of widow Aleya Begum -- has triggered a firestorm of protests in the area.
Aleya Begum alleged that the accused used to threaten her to evict her homestead, where she and her family members have been living since 2006.
The brothers came to the house on Thursday afternoon and beat up her and her daughter, Aleya alleged.
Yesterday morning, they came to the house again and slaughtered the dogs claiming that they were rabid animals, she said. “We begged them not to carry out the brutality.”
“They also threatened that we will suffer the same fate if we don't leave,” she added.
Maona UP member Surujjaman said he has advised the woman to seek help from the administration.
Dr Abdul Jalil, upazila animal resources officer, said killing animals is a punishable offence.
Despite repeated attempts, this correspondent could not get in touch with Hashem and Arif.
