VC-backed teachers win 9 posts
The vice chancellor (VC)-backed panel of teachers secured nine posts in Jahangirnagar University Teachers’ Association (Juta) election held yesterday on the campus. The anti-VC panel secured six posts.
The former won posts of president and vice-president, while the latter secured general secretary and joint secretary.
A total of 560 teachers out of 598 exercised their franchise at the polls held at the university’s teachers’ club.
The anti-VC platform -- an alliance of pro-Awami League, pro-BNP and left-leaning teachers -- contested under “Sammilito Sikkhak Samaj”, while the VC-backed teachers contested with the banner of “Bangabandhu Shikkhak Parishad”.
Prof AA Mamun of physics department became president. Prof Mohammad Amzad Hossain of economics department won the general secretary post.
Prof Syed Hafizur Rahman of environmental sciences, Associate Prof Borhan Uddin of biochemistry and molecular biology, and Prof Motahar Hossain of Institute of Business Administration were elected vice-president, joint secretary and treasurer respectively.
