UGC approves JU IRS
University Grants Commission (UGC) has approved the Institute of Remote Sensing (IRS) at Jahangirnagar University (JU), said a press release.
The institute can conduct post graduate education under courses of environmental sciences, geography and environment, civil engineering, forestry, land management, geology, urban and regional planning, oceanography, soil science and architecture.
The press release added that the institute must change its name to Institute of Remote Sensing and GIS (Geographical Information System) or Institute of Geoinformatics.
Director of IRS Prof Sheikh Tawhidul Islam said, “To reach the country’s sustainable development plans, the authorities should increase the involvement of remote sensing and related technologies.”
“This institute plays significant roles in filling up the capacity and knowledge gaps [in these fields] by providing skill development trainings, undertaking research projects and acting as knowledge sharing platforms,” he added.
Established in 1982, the institute started its activities fully in 2017 following the university syndicate’s approval.
