Two sentenced to death for gang-rape, murder
A Khulna court yesterday sentenced two people to death for killing a minor of Bastuhara Colony after gang rape in Khulna city in 2009.
Judge Mohammad Mohiduzzaman of Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-3 in Khulna passed the order. The accused were fined Tk 1 lakh each.
The convicts are: Babul Howlader alias Kala Babul (38) of Bastuhara Colony and Emdad Hossain (37) of the same area.
The acquitted accused are: Asha Mia (22), Zahangir Ali (25), Zahidul Islam (40) and Nazrul Islam (35) of Bastuhara Colony.
The accused were all present at the court during the verdict.
Special Public Prosecutor Advocate Farid Ahmed, on behalf of the state, and plaintiff’s lawyer Mominul Islam handled the case.
Advocate Mominul Islam told The Daily Star that two people were awarded death penalty and fined Tk one lakh each for gang rape and murder of the 14-year-old victim.
Father of the victim expressed his satisfaction over the verdict and demanded immediate execution of the convicts.
According to the case statement, on November 15, 2009, the victim went out to buy food. When she did not return after a few hours, her father filed a general diary at Khalishpur Police Station.
Khalishpur police recovered the body of the victim from a nearby area the next day.
Later, the victim’s father filed a case citing that Kala Babul and his associates harassed his daughter.
On March 23, 2010, the investigating officer of the case, Abu Mukadesh Ali, of Khalishpur Police Station, filed the charge sheet accusing six men. Of the 18 witnesses in the case, 13 have testified.
