Two cops suspended for 'planting yaba' on farmer
Two sub-inspectors of Pirganj Police Station were suspended for allegedly attempting to implicate a farmer in a drug-related case in Pirganj upazila of Rangpur on Thursday.
Swapan Kumar and Jahangir Alam, SIs of Pirganj Police Station, were suspended following a directive from Mizanur Rahman, superintendent of police in Rangpur, said Rezaul Karim, officer-in-charge of Pirganj Police Station.
Both of them will face departmental actions, said the OC.
They went to Rezwan Mor area in the upazila around 7:00pm, the OC said, quoting Enamul Haque Shamim, a union parishad chairman.
The police officers held farmer Rafiqul Islam, 44, and searched his body. They also forced him to get on a motorbike, he added.
When Rafiq refused to do so, a scuffle ensued between him and the policemen.
“They put five yaba pills in Rafiq's shirt pocket to implicate him in a drug peddling case,” Enamul Haque said, quoting him.
Locals caught the policemen and took them to the UP chairman after a beating, the OC said. Villagers also demonstrated to protest the incident.
A team of police rushed to the spot to rescue the SIs, but they were obstructed by the mob, OC Rezaul said.
Additional police were deployed to control the situation. The SIs were taken to Pirganj Police Station around 11:00pm.
