TV channels have full freedom: PM
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday said all television channels in the country are enjoying full freedom.
She made the remarks when a delegation of Association of Television Channel Owners (ATCO) met her at her office. PM’s Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim briefed reporters after the meeting.
The Prime Minister said Bangladesh once had only one television channel, BTV. The Awami League government opened up the media industry to the private sector after assuming office in 1996.
ATCO leaders said they are sincerely working with authorities concerned to start full transmission of all private TV channels using Bangabandhu Satellite-1.
They also placed some demands before the PM, such as making all TV channels pay-channels, and digitising the cable TV distribution process.
Information Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud, PM’s Adviser and owner of Independent Television Salman F Rahman, ATCO Chairman Anjan Chowdhury, Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury, Mozammel Haqu Babu and Ahmed Jobair were also present at the meeting.
