Trucker's helper who became a millionaire
Monwar Hossain Russel started working as a helper of a truck driver back in 2003.
Hailing from Rajshahi's Godagari upazila, the 25-year-old had to work hard to support his family. He even drove a microbus for a private company after getting married in 2006.
Within 12 years, he became a millionaire.
He now owns at least seven trucks, a car and properties in his home town, Rajshahi city, and the capital.
His is not a story of changing one's fortune through dedication and hard work, but rather resorting to drug peddling to make a quick buck.
And the law eventually caught up with him.
Yesterday afternoon, a team of detectives of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP) raided his house in Uposhahor area, a posh neighbourhood, and arrested Monwar and his wife, Morium Khatun, 26.
The team also seized 935 yaba pills -- 880 from inside a flower vase and 55 from his car, said Fazlul Karim, assistant commissioner of the RMP Detective Branch.
The police official said, “We had information about him, not his wife.” But during interrogation, Morium confessed her involvement. She learnt the ins and outs of the business from her husband and helped him expand its network, he added.
A case was filed with Boalia Police Station in this regard. The couple was placed before a metropolitan magistrate court later in the day, which sent them to jail.
The assistant commissioner said while working in the transport sector, Monwar got involved in the trade. The couple knew a drug peddler in Cox's Bazar who supplied the pills to them and in return they supplied him with heroin, he added.
In August 2016, Rapid Action Battalion arrested him with 60,000 yaba tablets in Sirajganj. But he was freed on bail.
Monwar then moved to Rajshahi city, after his parents found out about his illegal business, Fazlul Karim said quoting family members.
Monwar also owns a four-storey building on a 5-katha land in the city's Terokhadia area. Other than owning two flats in Dhaka, he had a flat at Uposhahor, which he sold early this year, said the police official.
“We will take them in remand for further investigation,” he added.
