Trial of Zafar Iqbal attack case begins
A Sylhet court yesterday started the trial of a case filed over the attack on eminent educationist Prof Muhammad Zafar Iqbal at a programme on Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (Sust) campus on March 3 last year.
During hearing yesterday, Additional Session Judge Mominun Nesar recorded the testimony of Ishfaqul, in presence of all the accused of the case, said Masuk Ahmed, additional public prosecutor of the court.
The court also set April 25 for recording testimonies, the prosecutor added.
Prof Zafar Iqbal was stabbed three times on the back of his head during a programme at Mukta Mancha on the campus.
The renowned writer was first taken to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital and then airlifted to CMH in Dhaka the same day, while the attacker Foyzur Hasan was caught red-handed and handed over to police.
The next day, Muhammad Ishfaqul Hossain, registrar of the university, filed the case with Jalalabad Police Station in Sylhet.
On July 26 last year, OC Shafiqul Islam of the police station pressed charges against six persons including Foyzur. The lone attacker gave confessional statement under section 164, after he was produced before a magistrate's court on March 18 last year.
