Transport workers barricade Rajshahi highways
Transport workers yesterday obstructed traffic on different highways in Rajshahi for two hours after three of their fellows were sent to jail by a court over the death of a schoolboy last month.
Around 3:00pm, the workers staged a sit-in at Nawdapara point on Rajshahi-Naogaon highway as well as on Rajshahi bypass road.
They also barricaded Rajshahi-Chapainawabganj highway in Kasiadanga area about the same time.
Rabiul Islam, officer-in-charge of Kasiadanga Police Station, said following hours of negotiations, around 5:00pm, police officials and transport leaders succeeded in convincing the workers to remove the barriers.
Eighth grader Maruf Hossain died in Rajshahi Medical College Hospital after being run over by a truck on Rajshahi-Chapainawabganj highway on September 14.
The three jailed -- truck owner Babu Azad, its driver Jibon and his helper Bulbul -- were accused in a murder case filed by Maruf's grandfather Azizul Alam.
They were arrested yesterday morning when they surrendered to Kasiadanga police.
The three were produced before a metropolitan magistrate's court later in the day.
The court denied their bail prayers and sent them to jail.
Kamal Hossain Robi, president of transport workers union, said some transport workers put barricades on the highways after the three were sent to jail.
“Some transport leaders also obstructed the highways whimsically. It wasn't our decision.”
