Titash upazila AL candidate arrested
Titash upazila's Awami League-nominated chairman candidate and former vice chairman Shahinul Islam Sohel Sikder was arrested from his residence in the capital's Jatrabari yesterday at 2am.
Syed Ahsanul Islam, officer-in-charge of Titash police station said, “Arrestee Sohel Sikder is accused in eight cases including the murder case of upazila parishad chairman Monir Hossain. He is now in custody of Cumilla Detective Branch police.”
After Monir Hossain (chairman of Jiarkandi Union Parishad) was murdered in November 2016, his wife Tahmina Akter filed a case accusing Sohel Sikder and 12 others.
After investigation, police submitted a charge sheet excluding Sohel Sikder, but court handed it over to Police Bureau Investigation (PBI) to do probe investigation. PBI submitted a charge sheet accusing Sohel Sikder last year.
After that Sohel took four weeks anticipatory bail from high court, but appellate division stayed his bail. Meanwhile he participated in Titash upazila election.
Syed Nurul Islam, Superintendent of Police (SP) of Cumilla said to journalists, “Two other cases were filed against Sohel for violence during election.”
Earlier on 31st march, Election Commission withheld Titash upazila polls amid allegation of violence.
