TIB concerned over bail of prime accused
Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) yesterday expressed deep concern over further delay in ensuring justice, caused by the bail of prime accused Shafat Ahmed, in a case filed for rape of two private university students at The Raintree Dhaka hotel in the capital last year.
In a press statement, TIB demanded a speedy trial and exemplary punishment of the guilty.
“The case remains pending a year and a half after the charge was framed whereas according to the nature of the case, the legal process was due for completion within 180 days. Therefore, the question remains whether such delay and granting of bail are helpful in ensuring justice,” said Dr Iftekharuzzaman, executive director of TIB.
Dr Iftekharuzzaman alleged that according to media report, the case was moved to another court earlier this year and more recently, immediately before the bail of the prime accused, its judge was changed. In such a reality, question regarding commitment to ensure justice arises.
The anti-graft watchdog called upon the government to prevent any impediment to justice.
A Dhaka court granted bail to Shafat Ahmed, son of Apan Jewellers' owner Dildar Ahmed, on Thursday. On May 11, 2017 police arrested him after one of the two victims had filed a rape case with Banani Police Station accusing five people, including Shafat.
