Suspended municipal mayor denied bail
A Rajshahi court yesterday denied bail to suspended Shahzadpur municipality mayor Halimul Haque Miru in a case filed for killing journalist Abdul Hakim Shimul.
Judge Anup Kumar also sent him to jail and set August 8 for charge framing, said public prosecutor Entajul Haque. The court, however, granted bail to 37 other accused in the case.
On February 2, 2017, Shimul, Shahzadpur correspondent of the daily Samakal, was shot in the head with a gun owned by Miru, while covering a clash between two groups of Chhatra League in the municipality. He died the next day.
Shimul’s wife filed a case with Shahzadpur Police Station accusing Miru and 17 others in the FIR. Miru was arrested the same year after being suspended as mayor.
On May 2, 2017, police pressed charges against Miru, his brother Mintu, and 36 others. Following a home ministry order in 2018, the case was transferred from a Sirajganj court to Rajshashi Speedy Trial Tribunal.
