Suspected robber killed in 'shootout' with police
A suspected robber was killed and five members of police were injured in a “gunfight between a group of robbers and police” in Uttar Kattoli embankment area of Chattogram city early yesterday.
The man was identified as Mohammad Sabuj alias Pichchi Sabuj, 25, son of Mohammad Ibrahim from Shapla residential area of Akbarshah.
Following the gunfight, police arrested another suspected robber, Kayes Uddin Opu, 25, and recovered four firearms including two pistols, two light guns and bullets, said police.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) Sadip Kumar Das of Pahartoli Police Station told The Daily Star that the injured members of police including Sub-Inspector Ornab, ASI Mitu Das and Constable Belayet Hossain were given primary treatment after the incident.
The gunfight took place around 12:45am when police went to Uttar Kattoli beribadh area of Pahartoli to arrest a group of armed robbers who were preparing to commit robbery, he said.
Sensing the presence of police, the robbers opened fire and pelted stones, and police retaliated with gunfire, the OC claimed, adding that they found the bullet-hit body of Sabuj and arrested Kayes from the scene while other robbers managed to flee.
“Sabuj was pronounced dead by doctors after he was taken to Chattogram Medical College Hospital.”
Sabuj was accused in seven cases filed with Sitakunda, Akbar Shah and Pahartoli police stations while Kayes is accused in four cases filed with Pahartoli Police Station, OC Sadip added.
RAB ARRESTS FIVE, SEIZES 496 BOTTLES OF PHENSEDYL
Meanwhile, in the early hours yesterday, the Rapid Action Battalion (Rab-7) arrested five suspected drug dealers and confiscated 496 bottles of Phensedyl, a pistol, two bullets and a car from their possession in City Gate area.
