Students, teachers stage emonstrations at RU
Teachers and students of Rajshahi University (RU) staged separate demonstrations on the campus yesterday, demanding removal of the university’s vice chancellor and pro-vice chancellor.
Around 10am, students arranged a mass-signature collection programme on the central library premises -- protesting under the banner of “Against Terrorism and Corruption”. Later, around 12pm, they took position before the university administrative building. They showed “red card” to the university administration, demanding resignation of VC Prof M Abdus Sobhan and Pro-VC Prof Choudhury Zakaria.
Earlier at 11am, a group of teachers under the banner of “Teachers against Corruption”, demonstrated in front of the senate building with the same demand for removal of the two top officials.
At the same time, around 60 teachers -- members of RU Jatiyatabadi Teachers Forum -- staged a separate demonstration with the same demand. They also demanded exemplary punishment for the killers of Buet student Abrar Fahad.
Last month, an audio clip of a conversation between the pro-VC and wife of a job seeker surfaced on social media, where Prof Zakaria is heard talking about money for a recruitment.
On the other hand, speaking at an international conference at the university’s senate building, the VC said “Jai Hind”, which drew strong reaction on social media.
