Stop use of Glyphosate herbicides
Seven rights organisations on Monday sent a legal notice to the government, to immediately stop import, use, marketing and sale of all herbicides and pesticides that contain hazardous Glyphosate, including roundup herbicides, for the security of people's health and environment.
In the legal notice, they also requested authorities concerned to withdraw and destroy already-imported and marketed herbicides and pesticides containing Glyphosate, and to cancel their registration.
Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association (Bela), Unnyan Bikalper Neeti Nirdharani Gabeshana (UBNNG), Environment and Social Development Organization (ESDO), Poribesh Bachao Andolon (Poba), Bangladesh Paribesh Andolon (Bapa), Shikkha, Swasthya Unnayan Karjakrom (SSUK) and Bangladesh Resource Centre for Indigenous Knowledge (BRCIK) collectively served the legal notice, requesting respondents to take steps and to inform them in 15 days.
Secretaries to the ministries of agriculture, forest and environment, health and commerce, director generals of Directorate of Bangladesh Agriculture Extension, Bangladesh Agriculture Research Council and Department of Environment, director of Plant Protection Wing and Bangladesh Crop Protection Association have been served the legal notice.
Advocate Sayeed Ahmed Kabir served the legal notice on behalf of the rights bodies.
