Thread, needle left in woman’s body during surgery at RMCH
A piece of surgical thread and a needle -- that had been left inside the body of a woman during delivery at Rangpur Medical College Hospital (RMCH), were removed two days later yesterday.
Family members said 19-year-old Afroza Begum was admitted to RMCH on Tuesday as she went into labour pain.
Around 8pm that day, she was taken to the operation theatre, where she gave birth to a baby girl through normal delivery. However, she had to undergo a minor surgery to enhance space at the womb’s entrance, said doctors.
But after delivery, Afroza repeatedly complained of pain in the operated area, said Afroza’s husband Tanzid.
Her mother-in-law Rejina Begum alleged that nurses slapped Afroza several times as she complained of pain, and later shifted her to a post-operative room. However, her pain did not stop, Rejina said.
Attendants of the woman noticed she was bleeding from the operated area. When they informed doctors, they prescribed an X-ray, said the mother-in-law.
Dr Sharmin Sultana, an associate professor and gynecologist at RMCH, said X-ray found a suture thread and a needle inside the body. “It was an accident,” she said, without giving any further details.
Rejina further alleged that the incident happened as nurses conducted the operation instead of doctors. She demanded necessary action over the incident.
Afroza’s pain was relieved after doctors removed the thread and needle at 3pm yesterday, she said.
Dr Sultan Ahmed, acting director of the hospital, admitted that the patient might have been slapped. “But I don’t believe the surgery was conducted by nurses,” he said, adding they will form a committee to investigate the matter.
