‘Step down if you have so many corrupt people in the party’
Krishak Sramik Janata League President Abdul Kader Siddique yesterday said Awami League has no right to remain in power if it consists so many corrupt people.
“Besides, the government isn’t democratic as it has not been voted in by people,” he said.
The veteran politician made the remarks while speaking at a press conference in the capital’s Jatiya Press Club. Krishak Sramik Janata League organised the event to express the party’s opinion on the recent drives against corruption and the current political scenario.
“We support the drives. But if those are conducted just as an eyewash, we will withdraw our support,” said Kader Siddique.
He urged the government to identify corrupt people in all sectors -- including administration and stock market -- and give them exemplary punishment, instead of only suspending or intimidating them.
“Without favour and patronage from the administration, gambling and casino culture could not have flourished in the centre of the capital. The beneficiaries of these still remain in the shadows,” he said.
The Janata League president also called upon the prime minister to engage in dialogue immediately to save the country.
“The country is now in a crisis… Dialogue is a must to save it,” he added.
Party’s general secretary Habibur Rahman Talukder, joint secretary Iqbal Siddique and Kader Siddique’s wife Nasrin Siddique also spoke at the press conference.
