Steel bridge collapses at Barishal’s Babuganj
A steel bridge collapsed over Rajerber canal adjacent to Madhabpasha Union Parishad under Babuganj upazila in Barishal after a heavyweight stone-laden truck attempted to cross it yesterday morning.
As a result, road communication was cut off from Barishal to Banaripara upazila and Nesarabad upazila of Pirojpur. There were no casualties.
Witnesses said the steel plates collapsed when the truck, en route to Banaripara upazila from Satkhira district, was crossing it at around 6am yesterday. The truck fell into the canal after the bridge collapsed.
The 120 metre long, 10 feet wide bridge was constructed in 2005 by Roads and Highways Department (RHD)
"This old bridge is only capable of handling load of five tonnes, but this truck weighed over twenty tonnes," said Masud Khan, executive engineer of RHD, Barishal.
The bridge will be repaired within seven days and a diverted route will be managed as soon as possible, he added.
