Spreading awareness on gender-based violence through symbolism
Rights organisation Naripokkho yesterday held a protest in front of Daffodil International University in Dhanmondi, where people covered themselves in burn dressing to symbolise the death of Feni madrasa student Nusrat Jahan Rafi.
Protesters carried placards that read, “I will protest this injustice until my last breath.”
“We are using this symbolism to speak up against the violence women face,” said an activist of Naripokkho.
Several other victims of sexual violence were symbolised through the protest.
Participants in the event urged people from all walks of life to stand against violence. They also urged women to break the silence in this regard.
Organisers also distributed leaflets outlining the situation and statistics of violence against women in the country.
Referring to dailies, the leaflet said that some 630 women have been raped between January and June this year. Of them, 37 were killed while seven others died by suicide.
“We want to spread this protest across the country. We will organise such demonstrations fortnightly until November 25 across districts. On that day, we plan to hold a grand rally in Dhaka and other cities,” Afsana Chowdhury, movement organiser of Naripokkho told The Daily Star.
The next demonstration programme will be held on October 14 across the country.
