Social change must to ensure women’s rights
Speakers at a seminar yesterday said a social change is necessary to stop violence against women and ensure their equal rights.
They also urged the country's women rights activists to continue their ongoing movement in this regard.
A section of students of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet), in association with four non-government organisations -- including Sajida Foundation -- arranged the day-long seminar on the Buet campus in the capital.
Speaking at the event, University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) Prof Salimullah Khan said social identity of men and women are not only a matter of dignity; it is also about power.
"Our society doesn't have equal distribution of power among men and women," he added.
The noted writer and thinker also said the current status of women in the country will not change unless the ongoing movement of women empowerment carries on.
To ensure equal rights for women, Jahangirnagar University Prof Anu Muhammad proposed that mother's name should be included for a person's identity purposes.
