Six union parishads go to polls today
Six union parishads of five districts along with Kanchan municipality in Narayanganj go to polls today.
Awami League candidate Rafiqul Islam and three independent candidates -- Abul Bashar Badshah, Mujibur Rahman Bhuiyan and Amirul Islam Amir -- are contesting the election to Kanchan municipality.
A total of 35,680 voters are expected to exercise their franchise this time. But many of them said there were worried whether they will be able to cast their vote
Assistant returning officer Mahbubul Alam said stern actions will be taken if anyone tries to create an untoward situation during the election.
The Election Commission has already deployed additional law enforcers and magistrates -- both executive and judicial -- in election areas for five days starting Tuesday.
Election Commission secretary Md Alamgir said all polls including that of Kanchan municipality will be held in a peaceful, free and fair manner.
Elections to six union parishads -- Kuti union of Kasba upazila in Brahmanbaria; Faridganj Dakkhin union of Faridganj upazila in Chandpur; Puthia and Jeopara unions of Puthia upazila in Rajshahi; Sirta union of Mymensingh sadar, and Amtali union of Amtali upazila in Barguna district will also be held today.
The voting will be held from 9am to 5pm without any break, joint secretary of Election Commission SM Asaduzzaman said.
He said electronic voting machines will be used in the Kanchan municipality elections.
Besides, by-election to the posts of chairman, member and women’s reserved seats of some 277 union parishads across the country will be held on the same day.
