Seven language heroes honoured
Seven Language Movement veterans from Sylhet were honoured for their contributions to the 1952 demonstration, in the city yesterday.
Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) and sylhettoday24.com, an online news portal, gave the honour by presenting crests and sashes at a programme in a city hotel.
Former finance minister AMA Muhith was one of the seven.
The other six -- who were honoured posthumously -- are former foreign minister Abdus Samad Azad, Advocate Monir Uddin Ahmed, Dr Md Haris Uddin, comrade Asaddar Ali, educationist Prof Sadruddin Ahmed Chowdhury and former finance minister M Saifur Rahman.
During the programme, National Professor Jamilur Reza Choudhury and poet and diplomat Mofazzal Karim -- who were present as guest speakers -- unveiled the cover of a book titled "Shabdogan Roktomita", launched by the SCC and sylhettoday24.com.
The book focuses on details of the roles played by Language Movement veterans including the seven.
SCC Mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury, who presided over the programme, and sylhettoday24.com Editor-in-Chief Kabir Aahmed said, from now on, they will honour other language veterans in phases every year.
