SCC mayor evicts illegal structures
More than 50 illegal structures were evicted from grabbed land of Dhopa Dighi, an iconic pond of Sylhet city, in a Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) drive yesterday.
SCC Mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury led the daylong eviction drive, following an eviction notice which was passed to the land grabber on Sunday, Shahab Uddin Shihab, public relations officer of the city corporation said.
The city corporation is now implementing a plan to renovate Dhopa Dighi with financial support of Indian High Commission in Bangladesh, under which it will be excavated to its original shape, while a restaurant will be built over it and walkway around the Dighi will be constructed.
Over the years, land around and Dighi has been encroached illegally and more than 50 shops and buildings have been built, and the encroachers did not remove the structures despite repeated notices from the city corporation.
Mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury said, “I have been re-elected by citizens to complete my unfinished work, and this is one of them.”
“After removing the evicted illegal structures' debris, we will start excavating the Dighi and the construction work of the walkway”, the mayor said.
