SC upholds stay on former MP Rana’s bail
The Supreme Court (SC) yesterday upheld its chamber judge’s order that stayed the High Court bail to former Awami League lawmaker Amanur Rahman Khan Rana in a murder case filed in 2012.
A four-member bench led by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain passed the order after disposing of the petition filed by the state seeking a stay.
Following the order of the apex court, Rana cannot get released from jail, Deputy Attorney General Dr Md Bashir Ullah told The Daily Star.
Following a bail petition filed by the former lawmaker, HC granted bail to him on March 6. Later, SC chamber judge stayed the order and sent the petition to the full bench for hearing.
Jubo League activists Shamim and Mamun were killed on the orders of Rana and his brother Kakon in Tangail on July 2012, according to Ashoke Kumar Sinha, investigation officer of the case.
Mamun’s father Abdul Aziz filed a case on July 2013, accusing 13 persons including lawmaker Rana.
He was shown arrested in the case in May 2018.
