SC stays bail of C&F agent
The Supreme Court yesterday stayed till October 20 a High Court order that granted bail to Mizanur Rahman Chaklader, an agent of Chattagram’s Clearing and Forwarding Agents’ Association (C&F), in a case filed on charge of dodging duty and smuggling.
Chamber judge of the Appellate Division Justice Md Nuruzzaman passed the stay order, following a leave to appeal petition filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) challenging the HC order.
The SC judge also sent the leave to appeal petition to the full bench of the apex court for hearing on October 20.
Police and ACC can now arrest Chaklader in the case following the order, ACC lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan told The Daily Star.
He said Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) under the National Board of Revenue (NBR) filed the case with Ramna Police Station on January 16 against Mizanur, on charges of duty dodging, smuggling and forging around 400 letters of credit (LCs).
Following a petition, the HC on July 14 granted six months’ ad-interim bail to Chaklader and issued a rule asking the government and ACC to explain why he should not be granted permanent bail, he said.
Deputy Attorney General AKM Amin Uddin Manik told this correspondent that Mizanur Rahman Chaklader is now out of jail following the bail order from the HC.
