‘Samrat’s arrest a diversion’
BNP yesterday demanded that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina immediately step down for signing “anti-state” agreements with India “ignoring national interests”.
“The prime minister has violated the country’s constitution by signing anti-state agreements with India. She has lost all constitutional right to stay in the post. We demand she step down,” BNP spokesperson Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said.
Rizvi, also senior joint secretary general of BNP, made the comment while addressing a press conference at the party’s Nayapaltan central office.
With Dhaka eagerly waiting the signing of the Teesta water-sharing deal, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her Indian counterpart Narendra Modi signed an MoU allowing India to take 1.82 cusec water from the Feni river.
Strongly condemning signing of the deal, Rizvi also urged the government to scrap all of the agreements with India, considering national interest.
“We are saying very clearly that the agreements signed with India -- allowing it to use Mongla and Chattogram ports, and take 1.82 cusec water from the Feni river are blatant violations of the constitution,” he said.
The BNP leader alleged that Jubo League leader Ismail Hossain Chowdhury Samrat was arrested to divert people’s attention away from PM’s India tour.
“Awami League thinks people of Bangladesh are fools. That’s why they are staging drama, one after another, to divert people’s attention,” he said.
Rizvi rejected the result of Rangpur-3 by-election, terming it “farcical”.
