‘Safe veggies for good health’
A three-day “National Vegetable Fair” began yesterday in the capital with an aim to motivate people to eat vegetables aplenty.
The main theme of this year’s fair is “Safe Vegetables for Good Health and Nutrition”. The event is being organised by the Ministry of Agriculture at Krishibid Institution, which will conclude on Sunday.
On the eve of the fair, President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued separate messages. They said the theme of this year’s fair is time-befitting as vegetables are essential for one’s good health and nutrition.
President Hamid, in his message, said Bangladesh has earned massive success in the agriculture sector as the government has taken various initiatives for its development.
Currently, the country is ranked third across the globe for producing vegetables, he said. Besides achieving self-sufficiency in granular food, production of vegetables has also increased by a record quantity in Bangladesh, he added. The president urged all concerned to be more active in the development, expansion and marketing system of agro-products so that the ongoing development trend will continue in days to come.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in her message, said Awami League government has implemented various agriculture-friendly policies in the country for the development of the sector.
Special importance has been given to some particular matters like reducing price of agricultural commodities including fertilisers and seeds, providing easy-term loans to farmers, opening a bank account at Tk 10, cash assistance to farmers, mechanisation of agriculture and expansion of e-agriculture, the premier added.
The marketing system has been further modernised, she said, adding that fair price of agro-products has also been ensured by establishing a “farmers’ market” in the country.
