Road crashes kill seven, injure four
At least seven people were killed and four injured in road accidents across the country in the last two days, according to reports from our correspondents.
In Manikganj, a seven-year-old boy was killed as a microbus ran him over in front of Lemubari Government Primary School in Manikganj Sadar upazila yesterday.
The deceased is Rafi Ahmed, son of Nurul Islam of Lemubari village. He was a second grader at the school.
Quoting locals, police said Rafi went out of the classroom around 11:30am to go to the toilet. Before returning to class, he went to a shop to buy chips. As he was crossing the road in front of the school gate, a microbus ran him over, killing him on the spot.
The driver fled the scene after the accident. Police are looking for him.
In Cumilla, two people were killed when a microbus and an unidentified vehicle collided in Kurchap area on Dhaka-Chattogram highway in Debidwar upazila early yesterday.
The deceased are Abdul Malek, 60, and his brother Saleh Ahmed, 70, from Parshuram upazila of Feni.
Police said the accident occurred when a speeding heavy vehicle smashed into the microbus. Two died on the spot and three were injured.
Abdul was an expatriate and returned to the country on August 15. He stayed in Dhaka for the last couple of days and was retuning home with his family.
The three injured were Abdul’s children and were taken to Dhaka for better treatment.
In Madaripur, a man was killed as a bus ran him over at Kathalbari Ferry Terminal in Shibchar upazila around 11am yesterday.
The deceased is Badsha Mia, 40, from Mongla upazila in Bagerhat.
Quoting locals, police said Badsha was going to Dhaka with his family by bus. At one point, he got down from the bus when the vehicle was waiting for a ferry to transport it.
When the bus was getting on the ferry, it ran over Badsha, killing him on the spot.
Later, police seized the bus but its driver fled the scene, added police.
In Chattogram, three people were killed in two separate accidents in the city and Patiya upazila.
In the city, Ratan Deb, 40, from Feni, was critically injured after his motorcycle and a local bus collided at Dewanhat overpass area in Dhanialapara around 2pm yesterday, said police, quoting locals.
He was declared dead by on-duty doctors after being taken to Chattogram Medical College Hospital, they added.
Ratan was an executive member of Bangladesh Anta-Zila Sarak Paribahan Shramik Union.
In Patiya, Md Rafiqul Islam Arju, 25, and Md Shahjahan, 42, both hailing from the upazila, were killed after their motorcycle collided with a truck in Amjurhat area around 11pm on Monday, said police, quoting locals.
Rafiqul and Shahjahan, who were family members, were going to the city from the upazila, and after the accident, fell into a roadside ditch. Police recovered their bodies around midnight and handed them over to their family, they added.
The bus and truck involved in both accidents were seized. One driver fled the scene while the other (trucker) was injured.
