Road accidents kill five, injure three
At least five people were killed and three injured in road accidents across the country during the last two days, our correspondents and news agencies report.
In Joypurhat, a schoolboy was killed after a speeding truck hit him at Tetultoli village in Sadar upazila yesterday afternoon.
The deceased is Joy Hossain, 11, son of Golzar Hossain. He was a fifth-grader at Joypurhat Barind Campus School.
Quoting witnesses, police said Joy was going to his friend’s house, riding his bicycle. The accident left him critically injured and he later succumbed to his injuries while locals were taking him to a nearby hospital.
Police seized the truck but its driver managed to flee.
In Savar, three people were killed and three injured in separate road accidents in Genda, Amin Bazar and Modhumoti Model Town areas yesterday.
At Genda, Shahin Alam, 42, was killed and two were injured after a truck hit an auto-rickshaw around 4am, said police.
After the accident, three people, including Shahin, were injured. They were taken to a local health complex where the on-duty doctor declared Shahin dead.
At Amin Bazar, Atiar Rahman, 32, was killed and one injured after a covered van and truck collided.
Driver and helper of the van were seriously injured after the accident. They were taken to Enam Medical College Hospital where the on-duty doctor declared helper Atiar dead.
In Modhumoti Model Town, Jibon, 38, was killed when a vehicle ran him over.
All bodies were sent to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital and the injured were referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, said police.
In Manikganj, Arifa Akhter, 28, suffocated to death after her scarf got caught in the wheel of the engine-driven rickshaw carrying her on Shahid Swarani road near Manikganj Zila Parishad around 8:15pm on Thursday, said witnesses.
On information from locals, police rushed to the spot and took Arifa to Manikganj District Hospital where the on-duty doctor declared her dead.
Police seized the rickshaw but its puller fled the scene after the accident.
