Rehana, Saima pay homage to Bangabandhu at Baker Hostel
Sheikh Rehana, younger daughter of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and Saima Wazed Hossain, his granddaughter, paid tributes to the Father of the Nation by placing wreaths in front of his bust at Baker Hostel in Kolkata on Friday.
They paid the tributes marking "Mujib Borsho" to be celebrated on the occasion of Bangabandhu's birth centenary, said a release of the Prime Minister's Office yesterday.
Being a student of Islamia College (now Maulana Azad College) in Kolkata, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman used to live in room-24 of "Baker Hostel" during his student life.
Currently the rooms 25 and 28 of the hostel are being used as "Bangabandhu Memorial Museum", said the release.
He was elected general secretary of the Students' Cabinet in 1946 and obtained his BA degree from there.
While studying in this college, Bangabandhu stood by the famine-stricken people and distributed relief goods among them.
Bangabandhu actively took part in the Pakistan movement, and he also worked to save people from the riots by risking his life at that time, the release said, adding that a big chapter of his political activities was written there.
The government has declared 2020-2021 as "Mujib Borsho" to celebrate the great leader's birth centenary, and the celebration programmes will start on March 17.
