‘Rapists are being sheltered’
Demanding punishment for the rapists and killers of nurse Shahinoor Akter Tania, rights and political activists demonstrated in front of National Museum in Shahbagh yesterday.
Under the banner of “Nipironer Biruddhe Shahbagh”, a civic platform against repression, they held a rally in the afternoon.
Addressing it, Mujahidul Islam Selim, president of Communist Party of Bangladesh, said a horrifying situation is prevailing in the country. “Children and women are not safe… Some are being set on fire. Unfortunately, it’s acceptable in this so called civilised society.”
“Rapists are being sheltered by the ruling party, administration and law enforcement agencies. The killing of Feni madrasa student Nusrat is the best example of it,” he said.
“But we won’t allow that… we won’t give the license of sexual harassment to ruling party leaders or law enforcement agencies,” he said. People should stand up against rapists and the culture of impunity, he added.
Nagorik Sanghati leader Sharifuzzaman Sharif alleged that the government apparently is not interested in trial of rapists and killers. The government is inclined to use the law in their favour, he claimed.
He also alleged that the government is using law enforcers for political ends.
Bangladesh Chhatra Union former president Khan Asaduzzaman conducted the rally where Samajtantrik Mahila Forum general secretary Shampa Basu; Chhatra Union (central) president Mehedi Hasan Rubel, its general secretary Anik Rai and former president Ferdous Ahmed Ujjal; Juba Union central committee president Hasan Hafizur Rahman; Bangladesh Khetmajur Samity vice-president Akramul Haq were also present.
